The best car for Uber drivers is whichever one has the lowest cost per mile you can actually buy
Short answer
Fuel is the only half of your cost per mile that changes with the car, and it is the smaller half. At EIA's published national average of $4.096 a gallon, a 52 MPG hybrid burns about $0.079 a mile and a 22 MPG van about $0.186. Add roughly $0.15 a mile of wear that does not care what you drive, and the total gap narrows from well over double to about 1.5 times.
The car question comes up constantly in driver groups and it almost always gets answered with a badge instead of a number. Somebody says Prius, somebody else says get a van and run XL, and nobody puts a figure on either.
So here is the figure work. Every MPG rating below is an EPA combined number read straight from the fueleconomy.gov database, and every gasoline price is EIA's own published weekly survey average for the week of July 27, 2026. Nothing here is estimated.
The short answer
Fuel is the only part of your cost per mile that meaningfully changes with the car. It is also the smaller of the two parts.
At EIA's published national average of $4.096 a gallon, an EPA-rated 52 MPG hybrid burns about $0.079 a mile. A 22 MPG minivan burns about $0.186. That is a gap of well over double, and over a year it is a lot of money.
Then you add roughly $0.15 a mile of wear, tyres, brakes, oil and depreciation, which does not care what badge is on the hood. Now the totals are about $0.23 and about $0.34, and the gap has collapsed from well over double to about 1.5 times. Both numbers are true. Which one you should be acting on depends on what you are choosing between.

The pair worth staring at is the Camry at 26 against the Camry Hybrid LE at 52. Same nameplate, double the rating. That is the cleanest evidence in the table that the drivetrain is doing the work rather than the body style.
One caveat that the EPA data carries itself: those ratings come from a standardised test cycle. Real rideshare driving means idling at the pickup, short hops across town, a full trunk and a loaded car, and it comes in under the rating. Use these to rank cars against each other. Use your own receipts to set your actual number.
What it looks like across a year
Take 25,000 miles as a working assumption, which is a number you should replace with your own odometer rather than trust from me.

The Prius against the Camry is $1,969 a year in fuel. The Prius against the Odyssey is $2,686. That is the real argument for a hybrid, and it is a good one, but notice what it is not. It is not an earnings claim and it says nothing about what you will make. It is a spending difference, and it only becomes a saving if the price gap on the car itself is smaller than the fuel gap over the years you plan to keep it. That is arithmetic only you can do, because only you know what the car in front of you costs.
Where you drive changes the answer as much as what you drive
This is the part that gets left out of every car recommendation I have seen in a driver group.
Same 26 MPG Camry, same EIA week. In Houston, at $3.600 a gallon, it costs $0.138 a mile in fuel. In San Francisco, at $5.578, it costs $0.215. Over 25,000 miles that is about $1,900 for identical work in an identical car.
Put those together and something useful falls out: a 52 MPG Prius in San Francisco costs about $0.107 a mile in fuel, which still beats a 26 MPG Camry in Houston at $0.138. Fuel economy outruns geography, but geography is a bigger factor than most drivers price in when they compare their numbers to somebody else's on the internet.
A note on how to look your own market up. EIA publishes weekly retail gasoline for nine states only, which are California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas and Washington, plus regional PADD figures and ten cities. There is no North Carolina row, so for Durham the honest figure is the Lower Atlantic regional average, $3.867 a gallon in that same week, labelled as a regional average and not as my state's price. In a 26 MPG car that is $0.149 a mile and in a 52 MPG car $0.074.
The half that does not change with the car
Fuel is the visible cost. It is not the whole cost, and for most drivers it is not even the majority of it.
DriverSignal's default cost per mile is $0.26, built from 28 MPG at a $3.20 a gallon engine constant, which comes to about $0.11 a mile in fuel, plus roughly $0.15 a mile for tyres, brakes, oil and depreciation. That $3.20 is a conservative engine default rather than today's price, which is why the fuel figures in this article run higher.
Set that $0.15 next to the table above and the picture changes.

The Prius is not half the cost of the Camry. It is about three quarters of it. Tyres wear at the same rate on both, brakes go at the same rate, and depreciation is a function of the car's price and the miles you put on it rather than of its fuel economy.
This matters because drivers routinely buy a hybrid, expect their cost per mile to halve, and are then confused when the shift totals barely move. Half of your cost per mile was never on the table. Electric, which needs a different unit
You cannot put an EV in an MPG column, because the EPA figure for a battery car is MPGe, an energy equivalence rather than a fuel consumption. The usable number is energy per mile.
A 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD is rated at 25.5 kWh per 100 miles, so about 0.255 kWh a mile. A 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV is 28.1, so about 0.281.
Multiply by whatever you actually pay for electricity. I am not going to put a rate in here, because the honest answer varies enormously between charging overnight at home and charging on a public fast charger mid-shift, and a driver who has to do the second one regularly is running a very different cost structure from one who does the first. Work out both, because on a busy day you will do both.
The wear half also behaves differently on an EV. No oil changes, brakes that last longer because of regeneration, and tyres that often wear faster under the weight. I do not have a clean figure to hand you for that and I am not going to invent one.
How this changes what you accept
The reason any of this matters is that your cost per mile is an input to every offer decision you make, and a different car moves the line.
Take an offer of $14.60 with a 7.9 mile trip and a 4.2 mile pickup. That is 12.1 total miles. At $0.229 a mile in a Prius the cost is $2.77 and the net is $11.83. At $0.308 in a Camry the cost is $3.73 and the net is $10.87. Across 32 minutes of total time including the pickup, that is $22.18 an hour against $20.39 an hour.
Both clear a $20 floor, which is the point. Most offers do not flip category because of the car. But the ones sitting near the line do, and over a shift of forty pings that is a handful of decisions going the other way.
The input that moves offers far more violently than the car is the pickup. Deadhead miles cost you at the full rate and pay nothing, and the minutes stretch the denominator at the same time. That is why I cut anything over 6.0 miles or 12 minutes of pickup unless it still clears 1.5 times my floor after every cost, and the reasoning is in the long pickup piece.
So which car
If you are choosing between cars you can genuinely afford, take the highest EPA combined rating that seats what you need and does not carry a payment that swallows the fuel saving. On the current data that points at the hybrids, and the Camry Hybrid LE at 52 is the one that reaches that rating on a familiar full-size sedan nameplate.
If you already own something and are wondering whether to switch, run your own numbers before you do anything: your miles a year, your local pump price, the fuel gap between the two cars, and what the change actually costs you. The fuel saving is real and it is usually smaller than the sticker difference for the first few years.
If you were about to buy a van specifically to run larger-vehicle categories, price the fuel penalty first. The Honda Odyssey at 22 MPG costs $2,686 more in gasoline across 25,000 miles than a Prius does. Whether the larger category makes that back is a question about your city and its demand, and it is worth answering with a month of your own data rather than with a hunch.
