Uber driver cost per mile: build your own number in ten minutes

Short answer

Cost per mile is fuel plus wear. The fuel half is exact arithmetic: your pump price divided by your car's MPG. The wear half is an estimate covering tyres, brakes, oil and depreciation, and roughly $0.15 a mile is a workable starting point until your own receipts say otherwise. DriverSignal defaults to $0.26 a mile from 28 MPG at $3.20 a gallon, but at EIA's published average of $4.096 a gallon for the week of 2026-07-27 the same car sits nearer $0.30.

Ask a room of drivers what a mile costs them and you will get shrugs, one confident wrong answer, and somebody who says "gas is about four bucks" as though that settled it.

It is the single most important number in the job, it decides whether every offer you look at is worth taking, and working it out properly takes about ten minutes. Here is the whole build.

Two halves, and only one of them is exact

Cost per mile is fuel plus wear.

The fuel half is arithmetic. You know the price you pay and you can know your car's economy, and the division is not in dispute.

The wear half is an estimate, and it will stay an estimate until you have a year of your own receipts. That is uncomfortable, and it is also the half that most drivers set to zero without noticing, which is worse than estimating it badly.

The fuel half, exactly

Pump price divided by miles per gallon. That is it.

EPA publishes a combined rating for every car sold in the US. Those figures come from a standardised test cycle, so rideshare driving comes in under them: you idle at pickups, you do short city hops that never let the engine settle, and you carry passengers and luggage the test never had in the boot. Treat the EPA number as a ceiling and use your own observed economy if you have been tracking it.

EIA's published average for regular gasoline was $4.096 a gallon nationally for the week of 2026-07-27. At that price:

The spread from top to bottom of that table is more than ten cents a mile. Across 2,800 miles in a month that is close to $300, which is the sort of gap that decides whether a car is a good rideshare car regardless of how nice it is to sit in.

Your pump price is not the national one

EIA publishes weekly figures for nine states. For the week of 2026-07-27, holding fuel economy at 28 MPG:

A Texas driver and a California driver in identical cars are seven cents a mile apart before either of them turns a wheel. On a 142 mile shift that is about ten dollars, every shift.

One honest caveat about that table: those nine are all the states EIA publishes weekly. For the other forty-one the only sourced figure is a regional average across a multi-state PADD district, which is a real number but not that state's price and should never be presented as one. If your state is not listed, use what your own receipts say. You have better data about your own tank than any agency does.

City figures move further still. The same EIA week put Houston at $3.600 and San Francisco at $5.578, which at 28 MPG is $0.129 a mile against $0.199.

The wear half, honestly

Everything the car consumes that is not fuel. Tyres, brakes, oil and filters, the alignment after a bad pothole, the repair you did not plan for, and depreciation.

Roughly $0.15 a mile is the placeholder DriverSignal uses, and it is more than half the total. That ratio surprises people, which is exactly the problem: fuel is visible because you stand next to the pump watching the number climb, and none of the rest is.

To replace the placeholder with your own figure, pull a year of records and add up:

  • every tyre, brake and suspension invoice
  • every oil change, filter and scheduled service
  • unscheduled repairs, excluding accident damage
  • the drop in the car's market value across those twelve months

Divide the total by the miles you drove in that year. That is your wear rate, and it will not be $0.15. It might be $0.09 for a well-kept hybrid you plan to run to 300,000 miles. It might be $0.24 for a large petrol car bought new.

Worked through with illustrative figures, the sum looks like this. A set of tyres at $680, brakes and rotors at $420, four oil changes and filters at $310, one unscheduled repair at $540, and a market value that fell $3,900 across the year. That is $5,850. Divide by 34,000 miles driven and you get $0.172 a mile of wear, which with fuel at $0.146 gives a total cost of $0.318.

Nothing in that list arrives on a schedule you can feel. The tyres came in March, the repair in August, and the depreciation never arrived at all until you asked what the car was worth. Spread across the year it is 17 cents on every mile you turned, paid or unpaid.

Depreciation is the one people leave out, and it is usually the biggest line. It never feels like a cost because you pay it once, years later, as a smaller number on a trade-in cheque. Every rideshare mile is a small withdrawal from that cheque.

What about the IRS rate

It exists, drivers reach for it, and it is the wrong tool for this job.

The IRS standard mileage rate is a deduction figure set for tax purposes. It is not a measurement of what your particular car costs to run tonight, and it changes annually, so any figure quoted in an article is potentially a stale year. Look up the current one on irs.gov when you are doing your taxes, and keep it in the tax column. The number that belongs in the offer column is the one you built above.

Electric cars

MPG does not apply. EPA rates electric cars in kWh per 100 miles, and that is the figure to use.

A 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD is rated at 25.5 kWh per 100 miles, so 0.255 kWh a mile. A 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV is 28.1, so 0.281.

Multiply by what you actually pay per kWh. That number is the whole story for an EV driver and it varies more than petrol does, because overnight home charging and a public fast charger are not remotely the same price. Then add wear on top, which for an EV skews toward tyres and away from oil and brakes.

I do not have a sourced electricity price to hand you, and I am not going to invent one. Your last utility bill has it.

Putting the number to work

Once you have a cost per mile, every offer becomes three lines:

Total miles = pickup miles + trip miles Net pay = payout minus (total miles times your cost per mile) Net dollars per hour = net pay divided by (pickup minutes + trip minutes, in hours)

Note that total miles includes the pickup. Deadhead costs you at the full rate and pays nothing, which is why it wrecks more offers than low payouts do. The case for a hard pickup limit is in the long pickup piece.

Note also what the third line is not. It is not dollars per mile. A per-mile test cannot see how long the miles take, which is why it marks good highway trips as bad, and why we removed it from our own engine. That story is in how much drivers make per mile.

What is a realistic cost per mile for an Uber driver?

It depends on your car and your pump price, which is why the honest answer is a build rather than a figure. DriverSignal's default is $0.26 a mile, made of 28 MPG at $3.20 a gallon for fuel, about $0.11, plus roughly $0.15 for tyres, brakes, oil and depreciation. At EIA's published average of $4.096 a gallon nationally for the week of 2026-07-27 the fuel half rises to about $0.146 and the total sits nearer $0.30.

How do I calculate the fuel half exactly?

Divide your pump price by your car's miles per gallon. At $4.096 a gallon, a 28 MPG car costs $0.146 a mile in fuel and a 52 MPG hybrid costs $0.079. Use your own observed MPG rather than the EPA rating if you have it, since rideshare driving with idling at pickup and short city hops comes in under the test-cycle figure.

What goes into the wear half?

Tyres, brakes, oil changes, filters, the occasional unscheduled repair, and depreciation. Depreciation is the largest and the one that never feels like a cost, because you pay it in a single lump on the day you sell the car. Around $0.15 a mile is a reasonable placeholder until you have a year of your own receipts to replace it with.

Should I just use the IRS standard mileage rate?

Not as a decision number. The IRS rate is a tax deduction figure set for tax purposes and it is not the same thing as what a mile costs you tonight. It changes annually, so look up the current one on irs.gov rather than trusting a figure quoted in an article, and keep it in the tax column rather than the offer column.

How do I work out cost per mile for an electric car?

Use energy per mile instead of MPG. EPA rates a 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD at 25.5 kWh per 100 miles and a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV at 28.1, which is 0.255 and 0.281 kWh a mile. Multiply by what you actually pay per kWh, which varies enormously between home charging overnight and a public fast charger, then add your wear estimate on top.
