How much do Uber drivers make per hour? I am not going to give you a number
Short answer
There is no honest hourly figure for Uber driving, because the answer depends on your city, your car, your hours and how selective you are, and because most published numbers quietly measure passenger time rather than time online. Calculate your own: take gross pay for a shift, subtract every mile you drove times your cost per mile, and divide by the hours the app was open. That last denominator is the one that separates a real hourly rate from a marketing figure.
Search this question and you will get a range, a confident-sounding figure, and a chart. Every one of those numbers is wrong for you, and a fair proportion of them are wrong for everybody, because they are quietly measuring something other than an hour of your working day.
I have driven 9,572 trips over three years and three months. I still could not tell you what a driver in your city makes per hour, and I am suspicious of anyone who can.
What I can give you is the calculation, which takes twenty minutes on your own last four shifts and produces a number that is actually about you.
The first problem: which hour
There are three different hours in rideshare driving, and articles quoting an hourly figure almost never say which one they used.
Passenger hours. Time with someone in the back seat. This is the flattering one, because it deletes every unpaid minute from the denominator.
Online hours. Time with the app open and you available. This includes the ping that never came, the fifteen minutes in a car park, the drive back from a drop-off in a dead zone. This is the honest one.
Hours away from home. Online hours plus the commute, the fuel stop, the car wash, and the twenty minutes cleaning up after somebody's Friday night. Nobody publishes this one and it is the one your family notices.
The gap between the first two is where most of the argument about driver pay actually lives. A figure calculated on passenger hours can be nearly double the same shift calculated on online hours, without a single number in it being false.
The second problem: gross is not pay
The payout on the offer card, and the total on your weekly statement, are both gross. Nothing has come out of them.
Every mile the car turns with the app open costs you money whether or not somebody is in the seat. Fuel is the obvious half. The half people leave out is tyres, brakes, oil, and the value the car loses just by having the miles on it, which never feels like an expense until the day you sell.
DriverSignal defaults to $0.26 a mile, built as 28 MPG at $3.20 a gallon for fuel, about $0.11, plus roughly $0.15 for the wear.
That $3.20 is a default setting, not a claim about what you are paying. EIA's published average for regular gasoline was $4.096 a gallon nationally for the week of 2026-07-27. At 28 MPG that is $0.146 a mile of fuel and a total closer to $0.30 a mile. The spread by city is wide enough to matter on its own: the same EIA week put Houston at $3.600 and San Francisco at $5.578 a gallon.
If your car is not doing 28 MPG, the number moves again. A Toyota Prius at its EPA combined 52 MPG burns roughly half the fuel per mile of a Toyota Camry at 26, which is a difference of several dollars across a busy shift and rather more across a year. Doing it on a real shift
Take one shift. Not a good one, not a bad one, just the last one that was ordinary.
You need four numbers: gross pay, hours online, total miles driven with the app open, and hours with a passenger. The first two are in the app. The third is your odometer at the start and the end, which is the only reliable source, because it catches the repositioning miles nothing else counts.
Here is the shape, with illustrative figures rather than a shift I am reporting.
Six hours online. Nine trips. Gross pay $131.40. Odometer says 142 miles. Passenger time across the nine trips came to 3.4 hours.

Two numbers, one shift, and they are eleven dollars apart. Both are arithmetically correct. Only the first one describes what six hours of your life earned.
Notice something else. Of the 142 miles, only some were paid trip miles. The rest were pickups and repositioning, and they cost exactly as much per mile as the paid ones did. If you had counted only the trip miles you would have got a cost around $28.80 and a net near $17.10 an hour, which is a number you could not spend.
Do this for four shifts rather than one, and take the middle value rather than the mean. A single airport run or one two-hour dead patch will drag a mean somewhere that does not describe your driving, and you will believe it because you did the arithmetic yourself. Four ordinary shifts is enough to stop the number jumping around; a month of them is better.
What actually moves the figure
Once you can calculate it, you can start asking what changes it. Four things dominate, and they are not the four people usually argue about.
Pickup distance. Deadhead hits both halves of the calculation at once: the miles come off your pay and the minutes go into the denominator. This is why an offer can look 40 percent bigger and be worth less per hour. I cut anything over 6.0 miles or 12 minutes of pickup unless it still clears 1.5 times my floor after every cost, and the reasoning is in the long pickup piece.
Dead time. The hour you spent parked is in the denominator whether or not it produced anything. Repositioning to a busier pocket costs miles; sitting still costs hours. Both are real and the calculation above is the only place you will see the trade honestly.
Which offers you take. This is the one drivers underrate. Levi Spires published an experiment in which he declined 184 Uber rides and tracked the result, and his hourly rate moved across a range of roughly $18 to $54 with no surge showing on his screen. He reported pickup time over 8 minutes as the strongest predictor of a bad trip. That is one driver, one market, one car, and it is not a forecast for you. It is still the clearest documented illustration that decision quality moves the hourly number as much as demand does.
The pump. At 142 miles a shift, the difference between $3.60 and $5.58 a gallon is about ten dollars a shift, or roughly $1.65 an hour of your online rate, before anything else changes. There is more on that in what you keep after gas.
Why I will not publish a figure
Two reasons, and I would rather state both.
The first is that it would be untrue. A number built from other drivers in other cities driving other cars is not a prediction about you, and dressing it up as one is the whole problem with this genre.
The second is that earnings claims in this industry are a live regulatory matter. The Federal Trade Commission has ongoing enforcement work on gig-economy earnings claims, including a settlement above $7 million against a gig platform over the numbers it advertised. Any tool that tells you what you will make is making a claim it cannot support, and I am not going to be the next line in that story to sell a subscription.
What I will tell you is the arithmetic, which nobody can take away from you and which does not need me.
Turning the figure into a decision
Knowing your hourly rate is only useful if it changes what you do next. The way it does that is a floor: an hourly number below which you do not accept, applied to every offer before you tap.
